Élisabeth Louise Vigee-Le Brun: Confident Prodigy Became an International Sensation

Image
Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun, Self-Portrait with Cerise Ribbons, c. 1782, Kimbell Art Museum Vigée-Le Brun: Woman Artist of Revolutionary France is major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum until May 15.  Élisabeth Louise Vigée-Le Brun's Self-Portrait from the Kimbell Art Museum explains her quite well. She shines with the confidence and elegance of a woman who would eventually become an international superstar. It shows off her top-notch artistic skills. Touches of brilliant red for the ribbon, sash, lips and cheeks to add sensual pizzaz. Portraits are not my favorite genre of painting, but Vigée-Le Brun's portraits are always dazzling. The light radiating through her earring is just the right touch. One reason we never hear her mentioned among France's top ten or twenty painters is that she was a painter of royalty who supported the wrong side of the French Revolution.  It is only last year that France gave her a major retrospective, although her international reputation w...

East Meets West in Mandala Art

Image
Temporary floor mandala, flashed by light onto the floor of the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery of Asian Art Mandalas, an important tradition in India, Nepal and Tibet have spread well into the West, or as some think, have always been in the West.  The exhibition,  Yoga: The Art of Transformation  at the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery of Art, takes us into art and history surrounding the physical, spiritual and spiritual exercise of yoga.  It's the first exhibition of its kind. After this weekend, they'll be gone with the show, but that's the spirit of mandalas, at least in the Tibetan tradition. Light Pattern on the floor of th...

Miró: Ladders of Escape

Image
Joan Miró, Nocturne , 1935, is a small oil on copper from the Cleveland Museum of Art.  A jumping man, crescent moon and spiral suggest the artist ability to leap above problems of life. "We Catalans believe you must always plant your feet firmly on the ground if you want to be able to jump into the air" In 1948, Joan Miró used these words to describe the Catalan mentality.  Like Salvador Dali and Antoni Gaudí , giants of modern art and architecture, Miro came from Catalonia, the area of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea near the French border.  Catalans had a language and cultural identify different from the rest of Spain. Washington's National Gallery, which hosts a Miro exhibition until August 12, completes the quote on a wall label:   "The that I came down to earth from time to time makes it possible for me to jump higher." Joan Miró: Ladders of Escape is the appropriate name for this exhibition which captures the flying spirit of this Surrealist artist.  From...
